Who can register to vote in North Carolina?

To register to vote in North Carolina, you must:

  • Be a U.S. citizen
  • Live in the county where you are registering, and have resided there for at least 30 days prior to the date of the election
  • Be at least 18 years old, or will be by the date of the general election 
    • 16- and 17-year-olds may preregister to vote
    • 17-year-olds may vote in a primary election if they will be 18 at the time of the general election
  • Not be serving a sentence for a felony conviction, including probation, parole, or post-release supervision 
    • Once an individual has completed a felony sentence, including any  probation, parole, or post-release supervision, or received a pardon,  they are eligible to register and vote. No additional documentation is  needed.

Can I register to vote online if i don't have a NC driver’s license or DMV-issued ID?

No!  Only if you are a N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles customer with a NC driver’s license or DMV-issued ID, you may register  to vote or change parts of your registration with the online voter registration service.

You can instead register by filling out the North Carolina Voter Registration Application (Spanish version) and submitting by mail. 

Is there a deadline for registering to vote online?

If you submit an application fewer than 25 days before an election, it will not be processed until after the election.
