What if I did not receive a personal property bill?

Semi-annual tax bills are mailed on the last Friday in April for the June 5th due date and the last Friday in October for the December 5th due date.

Supplemental bills are mailed monthly.  If you have moved to the City of Hampton or purchased a taxable personal property item and were not billed in June or December, a supplemental bill may be issued.  The Commissioner of the Revenue’s Office can assist in determining when you will be billed.  They can be contacted at (757) 727-6183 or by e-mail.

If you do not receive a bill it is your responsibility to contact the Treasurer’s Office at (757) 727-6374 or by e-mail.

In accordance with the Virginia Code, penalty, interest, and fees cannot be waived because a bill was not received.

When are personal property taxes due?

 

Personal property taxes are billed on a calendar year basis and are due on June 5th and December 5th of each year.

The taxes due June 5th cover the taxable period of January 1st through June 30th.  The tax bills are mailed on the last Friday in April of each year.

The taxes due December 5th cover the taxable period of July 1st through December 31st. The tax bills are mailed on the last Friday in October of each year.

Supplemental bills will be issued when a taxable personal property item is added to the tax rolls after the cutoff date for the regular billing periods.  Bills are mailed within 30 days of the due date and will be due on the 5th day of the month.

In accordance with the Virginia Code, the Treasurer’s Office utilizes the United States Postal Service postmark to determine if a payment is received on time.  Payments received or postmarked on or before midnight of the due date will be considered on time. 

Late payments will be assessed a 10% penalty. Interest will begin to accrue on January 1st at a rate of 9.6% per year.  Accounts that are not paid in full within 30 days of a delinquent notice will be assessed a $30.00 administrative fee and will be subject to collection action and additional fees.
