What is a REAL ID?
A REAL ID is a type of identification card that is a driver’s license or state ID card that also serves as a federal identification form. This form of ID will be accepted at airports and federal facilities, such as military bases and courthouses.

The official enforcement date is currently October 1, 2021.
How To Apply for a REAL ID?
The process for applying for a REAL ID is simple, although you will need to plan ahead and gather several documents. Read on for the three steps to obtain your REAL ID.
1. Gather Your Documents
1) Proof of Identity
Your identity document must contain your date of birth and full name. This could be a valid U.S. Passport, U.S. birth certificate, current foreign passport with a valid U.S. visa, certificate of naturalization or certificate of U.S. citizenship, and a valid unexpired permanent resident card.
2) Proof of Social Security Number
Those who are ineligible for a social security number can apply, but if you have one then you must provide documentation. You can bring a social security card, W-2 form, 1099 form, or a pay stub with your full social security number.
3) Proof of Residency
You need to bring two different documents showing proof of residency. This includes bills, lease agreements, school documents, medical documents, tax documents, and employment documents. It could also include vehicle registration.
2. Go to your Local Driver’s Licensing Agency
Your local motor vehicle office will be able to issue your REAL ID. Individual states may impose different requirements, so be sure to check with your state’s agency if you need additional documents or an appointment. Costs will vary by state.
How to Know if Your ID Card is REAL ID-Compliant?
Your REAL ID card will have special star markings on the upper top portion of the card. If your ID doesn’t have one of these, it won’t be considered REAL ID-compliant and you won’t be able to use it to board a commercial airplane.
